Fish Masala restaurant style

Fish masala recipe is actually adapted from a restaurant and now a days rather than serving the usual fish fry they serve fish masala along with their fish curry meals .

Fish masala recipe has two main steps grinding the masala for the fish and secondly marinating the fish. In this recipe spice powders are not used where it is made with whole dry red chilies along with pepper powder/crushed pepper.

You can use any fish of your choice most of the fishes goes perfect like Pomfret (Avoli) Mackerels, Sardines, Salmon , Tilapia , Rohu etc..

How to remove the raw smell of the fish ?

Step 1 – Clean the fish well ,add 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder , salt rub over the fish and after 2 mins., wash it out .

Step 2 – Add a tbsp of lemon juice/ vinegar , salt and a pinch of turmeric powder and leave it for a min of 10 mins., This step not only removes the odour but also makes the fish soft while cooking.

How to make Fish masala:

Serves :2 (2 King fish slices)

Pre Marination

  • 1/4 Turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • Salt
  • King Fish -2 slices

For the masala :

  • 10 Kashmiri dry red chilies- soaked in water for 30 mins (adjust your spice accordingly)
  • 4 Normal dry red chilies- soaked in water for 30 mins(adjust your spice accordingly)
  • 1 tsp Pepper powder (adjust your spice accordingly)
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt
  • Small piece of Ginger
  • 1 clove of Garlic

Other Ingredients

  • 3 cloves of Garlic – chopped
  • Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp red chili flakes (adjust accordingly)
  • Salt

Method

Step 1 – Pre marinate the fish with the ingredients mentioned under “Pre marination ” for 15 min.,

Step 2 – Grind all the ingredients to very fine paste mentioned under “To marinate “. Use the water that has been used for soaking the red chilies .

Step 3: Marinate the fish pieces with the ground paste and leave it for an hour.

Step 4: To a Tawa add coconut oil , place the marinated fish slices roast it equally on each side , cook until the fish is well roasted.

Step 5: Remove the fish slices , to the same tawa add the reserved ground masala , rinse the plate with little water , cook the masala until it becomes a thick paste.

Step 6: When the mix starts thickening add the chopped garlic, red chili flakes and curry leaves . Cook for 2 mins., so that the raw smell of garlic leaves.

Step 7: Add the roasted fish slices and coat them well in the masala. Drizzle some coconut oil & curry leaves on top. Serve it Hot !
