Thalasherry Chicken Kakkam (Kozhi Kakkam)

Thalasherry style Chicken Kakkam is recipe that is very much famous in the northern Kerala especially in Thalasherry. This recipe is almost similar to that of my Fried chicken thokku https://homemademe469876202.wordpress.com/2019/12/17/varuthafried-chicken-thokku/ . However there is some slight changes over the cooking method. This recipe was adapted from a cookery show and it looked absolutely delicious and hence sharing it.

Thalasherry style Chicken Kakkam is best served with steamed rice, chappati, roti, dosa, idli etc

In this recipe we mix all the ingredients together and cook them then the chicken pieces alone are removed and then fried in coconut oil and then added back to the curry . Frying the chicken pieces in coconut oil gives an awesome flavour to the dish and this step is where the dish enhances its flavor.

How to make Thalasherry style Chicken kakkam (Kozhi Kakkam)

Step 1: To a wide kadai add in Onions, tomatoes, ginger , garlic, chilies, curry leaves, coriander leaves , chili powder , turmeric powder, coriander powder , pepper powder and give a hand mix completely .Then add in the chicken pieces add salt and very little water mix well cover and cook for 10 mins., on medium flame. Until the chicken is well cooked. Check for the seasoning.

Step 2 : To a kadai add in some coconut oil for shallow fry . Once the chicken pieces are cooked remove them from the gravy and add them to the oil and shallow fry them until you get a crisp and roasted texture. You need not over cook the chicken as it will turn hard ,as the chicken is fully cooked the cooking time will hardly take for 2-3 mins on medium high flame.

Step 3: Meanwhile allow the gravy to cook , Increase the quantity of the ingredients if you want extra gravy for the dish. Once the chicken is fried add it back to the gravy coat them well in the masala and cook for a min of 4-5 on absolute low flame. Add in a tbsp of coconut oil , curry leaves , coriander leaves and serve it HOT!
